What is the Circle Craft Holiday Market?

The Circle Craft Holiday Market is more than just a craft fair; it’s a celebration of Canadian craftsmanship, tradition, and innovation. Established in the early 1970s, the market has grown to become one of the most successful and enduring craft cooperatives in Canada. It offers a platform for artisans to showcase their skills, engage with the community, and connect with shoppers looking for unique, handmade gifts for the holiday season.

From textiles, ceramics, and jewelry to woodwork, glass art, and gourmet food items, the market features a diverse array of products. Attendees can explore hundreds of booths, meet the artisans behind the creations, and discover the stories that bring their work to life. Whether you’re searching for holiday decorations, gifts for loved ones, or unique pieces to add to your collection, the Circle Craft Holiday Market provides an inspiring shopping experience that emphasizes quality, craftsmanship, and authenticity.

The History of Circle Craft: A Journey of Community and Creativity

The story of Circle Craft begins in the early 1970s with a group of artisans who saw a need for a cooperative that would support their craft and connect them with the broader community. One of the key figures in its history was Yetta Lees, an artist who initially gained success in a fabric festival in Victoria. Lees, along with Chris Wooten, organized the first Circle Craft Christmas Market at what is now the East Vancouver Cultural Centre. They faced challenges in creating a space where mainstream audiences could feel comfortable purchasing artisanal crafts, an issue Lees felt was critical for the success of the event.

Despite concerns that no one would attend, the market attracted over 500 visitors, demonstrating a strong demand for such an event. This success marked the beginning of a long-standing tradition, with Circle Craft growing into a nationally recognized platform for Canadian artisans.

Gene Miller, another influential figure, was pivotal in supporting the early days of Circle Craft. An American who had moved to Victoria, Miller was passionate about the performing arts and founded Open Space, a venue for theatre groups, artists, and craftspeople. It was at Open Space in 1972 where Yetta Lees first showcased her block-printed clothing, marking the beginning of her involvement in the Canadian craft scene. Lees realized that while her own skills as a craftswoman might not be as refined as others, she possessed organizational talents that could help elevate the craft community.

By the late 1970s, the market had become a fixture in Vancouver’s holiday scene. Lees’ vision of creating a more organized and inclusive event paid off, transforming Circle Craft into an accessible and welcoming space for both artisans and the public. Today, the Circle Craft Holiday Market is a beloved event that continues to honor its roots while embracing the diverse and evolving world of contemporary craft.
