On a December evening, Granville Island is one of the nicest places in Vancouver to just wander. Lights are strung across the narrow lanes between the old industrial buildings, the Public Market glows, and the artisan studios are full of last-minute gift ideas. Almost 40 acres are lit up, and it costs nothing to walk around.
The 2026 dates haven’t been announced. Here’s how the lighting has worked in past seasons, what to look for, and how to make an evening of it.

When Are the Lights On in 2026?
Not announced yet. In past seasons, Granville Island has run two layers of lighting:
- Winter lighting: on from November 1 until Daylight Saving Time returns in March.
- Holiday lighting: November 12 to January 3, switched on after Remembrance Day.
Both have come on daily at sundown. In 2024–2025, holiday lighting ran from November 12, 2024 to January 3, 2025. Confirm the 2026 dates before you plan around them.

What to Look For
Past seasons have included:
- an oversized star in the Public Market courtyard that changes colour
- the vintage crane near the Granville Island Hotel, lit up
- giant musical notes overhead
- a canopy of lights over a hidden alleyway
- festoon lights along the Railspur Artisan District, a star over Alder Bay in Ron Basford Park and glowing benches
Displays change from year to year, so treat this as a guide.

Shopping and Dinner
The island’s shops, studios and restaurants are half the reason to go. Places that have been open on festive evenings include Granville Island Brewery, The Sandbar, Bridges, Liberty Distillery, Tony’s Fish & Oyster Café and Vancouver Fish Co. Shops keep their own hours (in 2022 the Public Market was open 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM), so check before you go if you plan to shop.
Parking and Getting There
In past seasons Granville Island has offered free or evening parking deals, but nothing has been announced for 2026. The little ferries across False Creek (Aquabus and False Creek Ferries) are a fun way to arrive, and the island’s website has directions and parking details.
Lantern Night: December 21
On the winter solstice, the Winter Solstice Lantern Festival holds a lantern procession on Granville Island, with another in Yaletown. Hundreds of handmade lanterns moving through the lit lanes is worth timing a visit around.
Make an Evening of It
- Shop handmade at Portobello West at the Roundhouse in Yaletown (November 28 and 29), a short ferry ride across False Creek.
- Head downtown for the Vancouver Christmas Market or The Magic of Gastown.
- For a big ticketed light show, the VanDusen Festival of Lights is about 15 minutes south.
