Goh Ballet is a local institution, and its Nutcracker is built around a mentorship idea: aspiring young dancers from the region share the stage with Principal Dancers from internationally respected professional companies. The Story: What Happens in Goh Ballet’s Nutcracker

Act I: The Party, the Mice and the Snow

The story opens on a cold winter evening at the Stahlbaum home, where a Christmas party is underway. Clara and her brother Fritz greet the guests and tear into their presents. Then the mysterious Dr. Drosselmeyer arrives, entertaining the children with magic tricks and wind-up dolls. His gift to Clara is a wooden nutcracker, which instantly becomes the star of the evening. Fritz, jealous, breaks it. Clara is crushed, and Drosselmeyer quietly fixes it.

Once the guests have gone and the house is asleep, Clara creeps back to the Christmas tree to check on her nutcracker and dozes off beside it. At midnight, the room fills with giant mice. Life-size toy soldiers march in, led by the Nutcracker, and he ends up in a one-on-one duel with the Mouse King. Clara makes the decisive move by throwing her slipper, and the Nutcracker finishes the fight. In that moment he turns into a handsome prince.

He then guides Clara into the Land of Snow, an enchanted forest where the Snow Queen, the Snow King and a drift of dancing snowflakes welcome them. A sleigh carries the pair onward toward the Kingdom of Sweets.

Act II: The Kingdom of Sweets

Clara and the Prince cross the Lemonade Sea and arrive at a kingdom of treats. The Sugar Plum Fairy welcomes them, and in Clara’s honour the residents put on a feast of dances: chocolate (a Spanish dance), coffee (an Arabian dance), tea (a Chinese dance), and the Marzipan. There are also peppermints in a Russian dance, Mere Gigogne with her Bonbons, and the grand “Waltz of the Flowers.” The evening builds to the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier in the grand pas de deux.

Then Clara wakes at home, in her own bed, wondering whether any of it was real. It is a lovely, quiet ending, and a good moment to watch the kids’ faces.

What Kids (and Adults) Usually Love Most

The mouse battle tends to be the favourite for younger children, partly because it has real action and partly because the mice are a comedy of their own. The Waltz of the Flowers is the big visual payoff for adults. And if you recognize the music from every shopping mall and TV commercial of your life, wait for the Sugar Plum Fairy’s solo. Hearing it live, with a real orchestra and a real dancer, makes it feel new again.

Getting to the Queen Elizabeth Theatre
